Meal planning applications are everywhere, but most fail to create plans people actually follow because they ignore what users already have at home. EAT needed an intelligent system capable of understanding a person's dietary preferences, lifestyle, nutritional goals, and current pantry inventory to generate genuinely personalized daily and weekly meal plans.
Semantic Pantry Matching
The pantry scanner posed an even greater challenge. Instead of relying on simple keyword matching, it needed to semantically understand ingredients and recommend relevant recipes-even when ingredient names differed-while maintaining fast response times and cost-efficient performance at consumer scale.
GPT-4o Powered Generation
Toadsters built a high-performance backend using FastAPI with asynchronous REST APIs supporting meal planning, recipe discovery, nutrition tracking, and user management. GPT-4o was integrated directly into the platform to generate personalized meal plans and nutritional recommendations based on each user's preferences and goals.
Semantic Search Architecture
A semantic search architecture powered by Qdrant Vector Database enabled the pantry scanner to understand ingredient meaning instead of exact text matching, significantly improving recipe recommendations. MongoDB stored recipe collections, user profiles, and dynamic application data, while Firebase provided secure authentication, real-time synchronization, and push notifications.
